Sphagnum Moss or scientifically called «Sphagnum Magallanicus» is a vegetable of the Bryophytes family, which grows in the swamps or wetlands located from Puerto Montt towards the South of Chile. Sphagnum Moss has extraordinary properties for the production of various plants and flowers, among them, one of the most important, orchids. The orchids industry and production, has studied and developed the use of Sphagnum Moss for adequate production, giving these plants favorable conditions for their growth and for optimal development.

Sustainable and renewable

It is a renewable natural resource, which can return to its harvest height in a period of 2 to 5 years depending on weather conditions. Currently, its sustainable harvest is governed by a decree of law (decree 25 of the Ministry of Agriculture) which ensures that its harvest and management are adequate in order to perpetuate the resource over time.

Characteristics and uses.

Passive water retainer up to 20 times its weight.
Improves soil aeration.
Sphagnol, an antiseptic component of moss, helps the health of roots by protecting them from parasites and diseases.
In flower, prolongs the state of flowering.

Main Uses

It is highly recommended for the cultivation and development of orchids.
It is suggested as a substrate for all types of plants, especially acidic, succulent, blueberry and carnivorous plants.
It can be used as a soil conditioner, being used as an element of drainage and absorption of excessive soil moisture, giving better water absorption and improvement of the soil structure.
It is recommended for a terrarium of animals, since it provides adequate conditions of humidity and safety, especially for some reptiles and rodents.
